Through an online program, LA ESCUELA___ celebrates the inauguration of CUNA: Porous School for Landscape Construction, its first autonomous on-site school, located in Barranquilla, Colombia, dedicated to learning about red mangrove species and ecology.
In this AUDITORIUM session, La Orilla - Espacio de Arquitectura y Arte, and OAU - Oficina de Arquitectura y Urbanismo, will present the design, construction, and management process of the CUNA: Porous School for Landscape Construction project, winner of the "Building Schools_Public Spaces" architecture competition.
CUNA is an open school dedicated to planting mangroves in the Ciénaga de Mallorquín swamp (Barranquilla, Colombia). The project functions as an experimental laboratory for pedagogy and reconciliation, acting as an incubator where mangrove seedlings are cared for and nurtured by local caretakers and visitors until they are mature enough to be planted in the surrounding environment. CUNA's main driving force is plural learning in public space, seeking to foster moments of social and environmental interaction through creative exchanges with the mangrove ecosystem.
Since its inauguration in December 2024, CUNA has developed a self-managed on-site program that promotes integration and reconciliation between the community and the local ecosystem. The project proposes a pedagogical approach to the planting and protection of the red mangrove, a key species in the region’s vegetal and marine ecosystem.
